POINT OF INTEREST

Haneul Park

482 Sangam-dong, Seoul, South Korea

On the right bank of the Han River in Seoul, Haneul Park is one of five parks that collectively comprise the World Cup Park. It occupies the site of a former landfill that was intentionally rewilded, bringing a bit of nature back to the Seoul skyline. The park continues to operate with ecological preservation in mind, and relies entirely on natural energy.

The basics

Haneul Park encompasses the highest point of the World Cup Park, accessible by one of two sets of stairs. The main set has 291 steps, while a second staircase on the opposite side of the park has 425 steps. There's also a road, and while you can't take your own vehicle up, a shuttle bus is available to ferry passengers to the top. Highlights of the park include fields of grasslands and sunflowers, a wind power generator, and a number of observation areas.

Things to know before you go

  • Haneul Park is a must-visit for travelers interested in ecological preservation.

  • Wear sun protection and comfortable shoes, and carry water with you when you head up to the peak.

  • There’s no fee to visit the park, but you will need to pay to take the shuttle bus to the top.

  • Facilities include toilets and a small convenience store selling refreshments.

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Haneul Park is by taking a taxi or joining a city tour that includes a visit to the park. You can also take line 6 of the metro to the World Cup Stadium (exit 1). The park entrance is about a 10-minute walk away.

When to get there

Haneul Park is a year-round attraction, but most popular in the autumn, when the park's grasses are at their prettiest—including muhly grass that turns pink. Visit in October to attend the Pampas Grass Festival, which offers craft demonstrations, guided hikes, mediation sessions, and live entertainment.

The World Cup Park

While Haneul Park is a highlight of the World Cup Park, there are four other interconnected parks worth exploring. These include Pyeonghwa Park, with a pond and a playground for kids, and the river-facing Nanji Hangang Park, which has a cruise ship port and a camping area. Noeul Park features a golf course, while Nanjicheon Park is a recreational area specifically designed with kids, elders, and people with disabilities in mind.
