Hanoi Train Street

Ng. 224 Le Duan, Hanoi, Vietnam

Made famous by social media, Hanoi Train Street is a narrow stretch of an active railway line that runs between a residential area lined with houses, cafes, and bars in the Old Quarter. Visitors flock here to witness and capture trains passing by in extreme close quarters, as residents rush to move everything out of the way.

The basics

Hanoi Train Street is one of the most popular attractions in Hanoi and many tours include a stop there, which is often combined with other Hanoi attractions or food tasting. Although you can also visit independently by patronizing one of the many cafes or bars along the street, it may be easiest to visit with a guide, who will be better informed as to the latest legalities of visiting the potentially dangerous street and know where and when to visit.

Things to know before you go

  • Hanoi Train Street is subject to periodic closures to tourists by the authorities. It’s best to check the latest on the legal status of visiting the street and to obey any official orders, barricades, or notices of closures.

  • There’s a safety line marked in yellow, which is very close to the buildings on Hanoi Train Street. Do not cross the line when trains are passing by.

  • Nearly all cafes will require a purchase to watch the trains from their shop. Plus, many have an upstairs balcony where you can watch the trains passing by from a safer vantage point.

  • Families should be especially mindful of their kids' whereabouts and safety when visiting Hanoi Train Street.

How to get there

There are three main areas along Hanoi Train Street, along Phung Hung, by 5 Tran Phu Street, and 224 Le Duan Street. The Phung Hung section is the closest to the Old Quarter and tends to be the busiest. It’s within easy walking distance from the Old Quarter. You can also take a taxi, or go with one of the many tours that include a stop at Hanoi Train Street.

When to get there

During the week, trains usually only pass by in the evenings. Trains will pass by throughout the day over the weekend. The weekend is also the busiest time for Hanoi Train Street. Plan to get to Train Street and claim a good spot at a cafe or bar well ahead of any trains passing by for the best views. Many cafes will post the train schedule, though the timing is not always exact.

Nearby attractions in Hanoi worth checking out

Hanoi Train Street is located close to several other attractions in and around the Old Quarter. Admire street art at Phung Hung Mural Street; explore Vietnam’s history at the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long or the Vietnam Military History Museum; or browse for souvenirs and food or watch a cultural performance at Dong Xuan Market, Hanoi’s largest indoor market.
