Hato Caves

Franklin D. Rooseveltweg, Willemstad

Curacao’s limestone Hato Caves were used by indigenous Arawaks for shelter and by runaway slaves as a hideaway during colonial times. Today long-nose fruit bats call the cave home, while dramatic lighting illuminates its cave paintings, waterfalls, pools, Madonna statue, and formations with names such as the Pirate's Head and the Sea Tortoise.

The Hato Caves are the most prominent caves on the Caribbean island of Curacao. Visitors can take a 20-minute self-guided walk to see carvings by the Caiquetio people done more than 1,500 years ago or join a 1-hour guided tour, which takes place several times throughout the day and explains the legends and history of this underground world. A stop at the caves can be coupled with other Curacao attractions such as the ostrich farm.

  • The Hato Caves may not be suitable for those with respiratory issues or those who suffer from claustrophobia.

  • There is an on-site restroom facility and a snack bar where you can purchase drinks.

  • The trail can be steep at times, but there are handrails.

The Hato Caves are located 15 minutes north of Willemstad (where the cruise ship terminal is located), near the Curacao International Airport. Pickup and drop-off from Curacao hotels and the cruise port is typically included with guided tours.

During high season (from mid-December to mid-April) and on holidays, more on-site Hato Caves tours might be available. Keep in mind that you may encounter large touring groups when cruise ships are docked. As they’re aboveground, the caves can be hot and humid during the summer months.

Located in Willemstad’s historic colonial quarter, Otrobanda, the Museum Kura Hulanda offers an exploration of the transatlantic slave trade and Curacao’s role in it. The museum also delves into the cultural influences that combined to form present-day Curacao. Guided and audio-guided tours are available.
