Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant

Hellisheiðarvirkjun, Selfoss, Iceland, 801

The Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant is the largest geothermal power plant in Iceland. It’s located on the Hengill volcanic ridge in Southwest Iceland, though volcanic activity hasn’t sparked an eruption in 2,000 years. Along with the Nesjavellir geothermal power plant, Hellisheidi produces a significant amount of hot water in the Reykjavik area.

The basics

The Hellisheidi geothermal power plant is an active facility, so the only opportunity for a guided tour is through an audio tour that lasts approximately one hour. Open every day for visitors, the power plant’s exhibitions include multimedia presentations, an art installation, and other interactive stations detailing the history and operations of the plant that can be enjoyed separately from the audio tour.

Things to know before you go

  • Electric vehicle charging stations are offered in the parking lot for those renting an EV car.

  • The food and beverage options are sparse, as are nearby restaurants or shops, so be sure to eat before your visit.

  • Make sure you bring headphones for your smartphone to take advantage of the audio guide.

How to get there

The Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant is located at 801 Selfoss in Hellisheiðarvirkjun, approximately 20 miles (33 kilometers) from Reykjavik. It is along the Golden Circle route, the easiest and most convenient way to visit. You can also hire a taxi from Reykjavik or rent a car and drive to the plant via Highway 1.

When to get there

The Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant is open year-round for visitors to explore the exhibit, with its operating hours following a bi-annual schedule. Either visit the power plant early in your Golden Circle trip to beat the crowds or, depending on the season, visit at the end of your route to maximize daylight on the Golden Circle.

Visit the Geothermal Power Plant during a Golden Circle Tour

The Golden Circle route through Southern Iceland is one of the most popular drives in the country, and the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant is on the route. The drive can be accomplished in 3 hours, including popular stops like the Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Thingvellir National Park.
