POINT OF INTEREST

Heritage Park Historical Village

1900 Heritage Drive SW., Calgary, Alberta

Calgary’s Heritage Park Historical Village stretches out across 127 acres (51 hectares), creating an experience that immerses you in Canada’s past. As a living museum, the park features a working steam train, a 19th-century paddle wheeler, and horse-drawn wagons. From the sights to the sounds to the treats on offer, every effort has been made to help visitors experience life in a centuries-old Canadian town.

The historical village is a destination for history buffs and families alike—the kids will find plenty to love, with old-fashioned sweets and wagon rides, while grown-ups will be amazed at the scope of the park. Download the park’s app for a more immersive experience, and take your time exploring all the hidden corners of the village. Make sure to take a ride on the steam train, tour the S.S. Moyie, and browse the vintage-inspired stores as you wander.

  • Bring good walking shoes—there’s plenty to see and do, and you don’t want to get sore feet.

  • Try to visit on a sunny day so you can enjoy exploring the park itself.

  • The park features plenty of restaurants, so you don’t have to worry about packing a picnic.

Heritage Park Historical Village is a 20-minute drive from downtown Calgary—you can head south along Crowchild Trail SW and find the parking lot just off 14th Street SW. Otherwise, the park is accessible via public transit. You can catch the 304 for a 30-minute ride, before getting off at the Heritage Park stop and walking the last 10 minutes.

Visit during the spring or fall for temperate weather and a quieter experience than during the summer, when the park tends to fill with summer camps and families. Aim to spend a few hours exploring, and check the park website for information on the train and wagon-ride schedules.

Running from the end of June to the start of September, the park hosts a vibrant Saturday night market in Heritage Plaza, featuring food stalls and local vendors. The event is free and pets are welcome, plus the quaint atmosphere makes it the perfect date-night activity.
