POINT OF INTEREST

Highgate Cemetery

Swain's Ln, London, England

Shrouded by woodland and home to ivy-covered monuments, Highgate Cemetery is an atmospheric Victorian graveyard in North London. Some of the cemetery’s most famous residents include Karl Marx, whose grave stands in the East Side of the grounds; the author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams; and musician George Michael, buried in the West Side.

The basics

Highgate Cemetery is split into two parts: the East and West Side. You can prebook a ticket for the West Side in advance, but can only buy a ticket for the East Side on the day. While you can explore independently, guided tours are an excellent way to discover the history—you can book either a Highlights Tour or an East Side tour. Highgate Cemetery is also featured on George Michael–themed tours of London.

Things to know before you go

  • Smoking, eating, and drinking are prohibited.

  • There’s a gift shop at the cemetery that stocks items such as books, postcards, candles, and soap.

  • You’re asked to keep noise to a minimum at Highgate Cemetery, as it is an active place of mourning.

How to get there

Highgate Cemetery is located on Swain’s Lane. The easiest way to reach it is by public transportation, as there is no parking on-site. The nearest tube station is Highgate on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line; this station has step-free access.

When to get there

Highgate Cemetery is open from mid-morning to late afternoon or very early evening, depending on the season. The last admission is always 30 minutes before closing time. It’s open daily except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Other notable sights at Highgate Cemetery include the Circle of Lebanon, an ancient cedar tree encircled by tombs; Egyptian Avenue, a striking walkway set between a pair of obelisks; mortuary chapels built in Tudor Gothic style; and the Mausoleum of Julius Beer, hailed as the finest monument in the graveyard.
