POINT OF INTEREST

Homolovi State Park

AZ-87, Winslow, Arizona

Birdwatching, short hiking trails, and Indigenous history bring visitors to Homolovi State Park, also called the "Place of the Little Hills," the Hopi name for the land near Winslow, Arizona, where the state park lies. The park is a significant community site for the Hopi and is home to two ancient Anasazi archaeological sites with petroglyphs and traditional pit houses.

At Homolovi State Park, which can be reached as a day trip from Flagstaff, visitors can explore two sites of archaeological ruins (with interpretive signs) along walking trails, and check out a visitor center and museum with cultural and historical exhibits. Other highlights include desert bird habitats and Sunset Cemetery, the last known remains of a 19th-century abandoned pioneer settlement.

  • The park has tent and RV campsites with showers available year-round.

  • There is a day-use entry fee to enter the park.

  • Amenities include showers (for campers), restrooms, a park store, and picnic areas and tables.

  • Campsite reservations can be made online, by phone, or in person at the visitor center.

The park lies on the Interstate 40 Highway between Flagstaff and the Petrified Forest in Winslow, Arizona. There are no public transportation options or rideshares in this remote area of Arizona, so driving is your best bet. From Flagstaff, it’s a 1.5-hour drive east along Interstate 40. Once you’ve reached Winslow, turn left (north) on State Route 87 and watch for the Homolovi State Park Entrance Road.

The park is open year-round from morning to early evening, and is closed on Christmas Day. Spring and fall are the best times to get outdoors in Arizona, as the temperatures are milder. Near Winslow, summer can be quite hot, and winter in the desert can be significantly colder than expected.

Homolovi is about 60 miles (97 kilometers) east of Flagstaff, a strategic location for road trips around northern and central Arizona. Winslow, next to the park, is a popular stop on world-famous Route 66. Farther east, the Petrified Forest National Park houses the Rainbow Forest of petrified wood, more petroglyphs, and the ruins of an ancient Pueblo village. The Grand Canyon is about 2-3 hours away by car, through Flagstaff and Williams.
