Hong Kong Park
Central, Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Lush, manicured, and impeccably feng shui-ed, Hong Kong Park is a rare oasis of green in one of the world’s most densely populated urban areas. A lake, an aviary, and an artificial waterfall combine with playgrounds, sports facilities, a conservatory, a teaware museum, and a visual arts space to create the perfect escape from city life.
The Basics
From older Hong Kongers staying limber in the dedicated tai chi zone to young families feeding koi carp, Hong Kong Park’s bridges, lakes, and paths provide excellent people-watching. Many travelers swing by independently to enjoy the atmosphere before popping up the hill on the Peak Tram. A historical walking tour is a fascinating way to experience the park, which was built on the site of the colonial British Victoria Barracks, occupied by Japanese forces during World War II.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Hong Kong Park is popular with photographers, who love to contrast traditional garden compositions with towering skyscrapers.
- There’s no charge to enjoy most of Hong Kong Park but you will need to pay for activities at the sports center or the squash center.
- The park has a restaurant, a café, and modern bathroom facilities.
- Although set on a hill, the park is mainly wheelchair accessible, with roll-friendly bathrooms. There is even an accessible walkway through the aviary.
How to Get There
Hong Kong Park is in Hong Kong Island’s Central district. The eastern end of the park is a short walk from Admiralty MTR station, on the Tsuen Wan, Island, and South Island lines; the western end of the park is just opposite the base station for the Peak Tram.
When to Get There
The park’s outdoor areas are open from early in the morning until late at night, as are the sports facilities and the restaurant. The museum, visual arts center, aviary, and conservatory close in late afternoon.
Ways to Escape the City in Hong Kong
Nobody goes to Hong Kong for outdoor adventures but both the mainland and the outlying islands have lots to offer. Sai Kung in the New Territories boasts timeless fishing villages and sweeping beaches; the Ngong Ping 360 cable car has gorgeous views over Lantau Island; the Hong Kong Geo Park’s rock formations are perfect for a sea kayak tour; while the extinct volcano known as Tai Mo Shan delivers waterfalls and highland landscapes.
