The Basics

Plan to spend at least an afternoon or evening in Hongdae. By day, it’s a lively shopping district with trendy youth-centric boutiques, while at night it’s home to some of the best bars and nightclubs. Hongdae Mural Street (aka Picasso’s Street) is covered in street art, while Hongdae Walking Street features a stage where local bands perform. Many Seoul walking, cycling, and even kayaking tours (on the Han River) begin and end at Hongdae Station.

Things to Know Before You Go

Hongdae is a must-visit for night owls, shopping enthusiasts, and foodies.

Much of the action in Hongdae centers on Hongik University Street.

Hongdae’s central location and abundance of restaurants make it a good area of Seoul to book accommodation.

How to Get There

To get to Hongdae, take the Seoul Subway Line 2 to Hongik University Station and leave through Exit 8 or 9. From there, it’s a short walk to Hongik Children’s Park and the entrance to Hongik University. Alternatively, take Line 2 or 6 to Hongdae Station.

When to Get There

Hongdae is best known for its nightlife, so plan to visit after dark. A weekend market runs on Saturday from March to November, with stalls springing up near the university's front gate and selling Korean handicrafts and other souvenirs throughout the afternoon until sunset.

Attractions in Hongdae

Shopping and drinking aren’t the only things to do in Hongdae. The neighborhood is home to the popular Trickeye Museum, Hongdae Nanta Theatre (and its comedic cooking show), the Modern Design Museum, and a popularjjimjilbang (Korean spa).
