Hulihee Palace

The basics

Built in 1838 by the second governor of Hawaii, John Adams Kuakini, the estate became the vacation home of royalty, including King Kalākaua and Queen Kapi’olani, after his death. Today, visitors can view Victorian artifacts, including koa wood furniture, original bed frames and quilts, ornaments, and artifacts such as royal busts, portraits, and King Kamehameha’s giant spear. Visitors can tour the palace on a self-guided tour on Saturdays or join a docent-led tour by reservation. Some guided tours of Kona also pass by the palace.

• Access to the oceanfront lanai is only available on a guided tour.

• The second story is not accessible to those who cannot climb stairs.

• A gift shop offers handcrafted items, books, and souvenirs.

How to get there

The palace is located in central Kailua-Kona, on Ali’i Drive. It’s within walking distance of central Kailua-Kona, including other attractions such as the Mokuaikaua Church, the Ahu’ena Heiau, and Kailua Pier. There is no parking onsite. Free public parking is available on Kuakini Highway, and paid parking is on Sarona Road. You can also take the Hele-on Bus 204 or the Kona Trolley.

When to get there

The palace is open from Wednesday to Friday by reservation only and Saturday from 10am to 3pm. Self-guided tours are only available on Saturdays. Docent-led tours are available Wednesday through Saturday by appointment. The palace also hosts 12 free events annually, typically once a month, with performances by local schools and musicians on the lawn.

Mokuaikaua Church

Located across the street from Hulihee Palace is the oldest Christian church in the Hawaiian islands. Built in the 1830s, the church is constructed from lava rock, stone from temples that had been demolished, coral, koa wood, and o’hia trees from Mt. Hualalai. The church is open daily and offers Sunday services, tours, and other programs.
