Hwaseong Fortress
320-2 Yeonghwa-dong, Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hwaseong Fortress was built between 1794 and 1796 by King Jeongjo for defensive purposes and to house the remains of his father, Crown Prince Jangheon. The unique architecture of the fort, which took more than 700,000 man-hours to build, incorporates elements from China and Korea.
The Basics
Today, travelers can explore the impressive grounds that lie beyond a 3.5-mile (5.6-kilometer) wall originally erected to protect the fortress. Visitors should check out some of the 48 structures dotting the wall, including several old-world watchtowers with 3-story wooden pavilions that were once used as lookouts. A tourist trolley ferries visitors between various points of interest within the complex. The site can be visited in as little as a half-day from Seoul, but many travelers choose to combine the fortress with other attractions in Gyeonggi, most commonly the Korean Folk Village with its Joseon-era houses.
