POINT OF INTEREST

Ibiza Castle

Carrer Bisbe Torres Mayans, Ibiza

Perched on a dramatic hill, Ibiza Castle (Castell d'Eivissa in Catalan) marks the top of Ibiza’s Dalt Vila, or Upper Town. The island landmark was built over the course of more than 1,000 years and is an architectural hodgepodge of pale-colored stone that combines elements like a 12th century medieval design with 18th century barracks.

Cobblestone streets wind up to the castle, and the area’s steep, narrow lanes are best explored on foot. Climb to the top of the hill to enjoy great views of the Dalt Vila from the castle ramparts. For the best perspective on the castle itself, however, head to nearby Baluarte de Sant Bernat, a 16th-century bastion that is part of Dalt Vila’s historic defenses. Many tours the area stop at the castle.

  • Bring sturdy shoes; the roads are uneven and steep, and sandals are not advisable.

  • There are a variety of restaurants, cafés, and other amenities in the Dalt Vila, near the castle.

  • Due to cobblestones, steep streets, and stairs, the castle is not wheelchair accessible.

Ibiza Castle is located at the top of Dalt Vila. You can reach the castle via Carrer Major or Carrer de Joan Roman. Many people walk to the castle while exploring the neighborhood. To reach the site via public transportation, take the ALSA bus line L45 to the nearby Dalt Vila-Convent stop on Carrer de Joan Roman. There is a limited amount of parking available near the castle.

Sunset and sunrise are beautiful times to visit the castle; at sunset crowds gather from nearby cafés. To avoid crowds, visit in the morning, when the surrounding streets are nearly empty. The Upper Town can be very hot in the afternoon.

Many of Ibiza’s top attractions are packed into the compact Dalt Vila. After seeing the castle, head to the Diocesan Museum, which is located inside the beautiful Ibiza Cathedral and houses historic religious art. You can also enjoy more modern artwork at the nearby Museu Puget, or head to Casa Colom, which some locals claim is the true birthplace of Christopher Columbus.
