The Ibsen Museum showcases the life and works of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. He’s considered one of the fathers of modern theater and is among the most influential European playwrights of the 19th century. The museum is in the playwright's final home and features biographical exhibits and restored living quarters with personal belongings and artworks.

The basics

Located in central Oslo near the Royal Palace and National Theater, the museum exhibits photographs, letters, and artifacts from Ibsen’s productions. You can also see his restored study with an original writing desk and manuscripts. Admission includes short guided tours available daily on the hour, every hour during regular opening hours. The museum is run by the Norwegian Folk Museum. and houses a working theater that puts on Iben’s plays and other productions.

How to get there

The museum is on Henrik Ibsens Gate across the street from the Royal Palace on the south side of Slottsparken, the public park surrounding the palace. It’s a convenient location a 10-minute walk from Radhuset City Hall. The nearest metro station is Nationaltheatret, which is just a block away.

When to get there

The museum is open daily from mid-morning until early evening, with guided tours available every hour. When planning your trip, consider timing your visit during a performance organized by the museum’s theater or the nearby National Theater, Norway’s most prominent performance venue. The Oslo Theater Festival, held annually in early to mid-March, is also a good time to visit.
