POINT OF INTEREST

Ilha do Farol

Ilha do Farol, Portugal

With a gleaming white lighthouse looking over a small cluster of homes and long stretches of beaches, Ilha do Farol is a scenic island town in the Algarve’s Ria Formosa Natural Park. The pedestrian streets and sand tracks that connect the village with Culatra Island’s beaches make it easy to slow down here into the island’s relaxed pace.

The basics

Thanks to its lighthouse and beach, Ilha do Farol is a regular stop on most boat tours that explore Ria Formosa Natural Park. Most will combine several islands or stops in an itinerary, and will allocate no more than an hour or two for Praia do Farol beach. Come to Ilha do Farol on your own and you can expect to spend at least half a day here, mainly due to the transport required to reach the island from Olhão or Faro. Active visitors can easily fill a day by walking around the island to see its other communities and wild dunes.

Things to know before you go

  • There are no cars in Ilha do Farol or on the island, so walking is the only way to get around.

  • Ilha do Farol only has several restaurants; for more food options go to Ilha da Culatra.

  • There are restroom facilities at the beach, but note they are fairly limited.

  • Make sure to pack water, snacks, sunscreen, and other beach equipment, as it’s not easy to find supplies at Ilha do Farol.

How to get there

Ilha do Farol sits at the southwestern tip of Culatra Island, so the village is only accessible by water. Take the ferries from Olhão or Faro to the pier at Ilha do Farol, bearing in mind that schedules change between high season and shoulder season. You can also book a water taxi to the island if the ferry schedule doesn’t suit your needs.

When to get there

Ferries to Ilha do Farol from Olhão operate throughout the year, as do water taxis. It’s best to visit during the warmer months—from May to September—since enjoying the beach is the main draw here. Arrive early in the day to avoid crowded ferries and claim a good spot on the sand.

Visiting the Cabo de Santa Maria Lighthouse

Open to the public only on Wednesdays and select Sundays, the Cabo de Santa Maria Lighthouse offers visitors views of Ilha do Farol and the stretching coastline. 220 steps stand between visitors and the 19th-century lighthouse’s views and entry is free of charge.
