Janpath Market

Janpath Road, Janpath, New Delhi, Delhi, 110001

A bargain hunter’s dream, this small yet buzzing market is full of energy, not to mention clothing, jewelry, and a whole range of other goods at astonishingly low prices. Popular with tourists due to its location and atmosphere, Janpath Market is busy and lively, making it an attraction even for those who just want to browse.

The basics

Janpath Market is a great place to pick up souvenirs such as scarves, traditional Indian clothes, and jewelry, along with Tibetan and Kashmiri decor and fashion items. It's a frequent stop on shopping and market tours, and going with a guide can be helpful if you'd like help bargaining or want to learn about local handicrafts. Many tours to Connaught Place also stop here for a bit of shopping.

Things to know before you go

  • Janpath is a must-visit for souvenir shoppers.
  • Much of the market is outside, so wear comfortable shoes and sun protection.
  • Remember to bargain; it’s expected, and vendors will usually start with higher prices with the expectation that you’ll haggle a bit.

How to get there

Janpath Market is located along Janpath Road, which runs south from Connaught Place in the heart of New Delhi. It’s easy to reach on foot if you’re staying in Connaught Place. The nearest metro stations are Janpath (on the violet line) and Rajiv Chowk (on the blue and yellow lines).

When to get there

Most of Janpath’s stores and stalls are open Monday through Saturday from morning until after dinnertime, and closed on Sundays. Evenings tend to be busier with locals, and you’ll get the best prices (and avoid big crowds) by coming in the morning; being the first customer of the day is considered auspicious, so you might get a discount just by showing up early.

How to haggle

When shopping at Janpath Market, don’t be afraid to haggle for a better price. This is expected, so never accept the first price you’re offered by a vendor, and always bid a little lower than you ultimately want to pay, so you can meet in the middle. The first rule of haggling is to keep it friendly and positive—a genuine smile goes a long way.
