Jardim do Morro
Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, 4430-210
Overlooking the Douro River and with views out to the Porto cityscape, the Jardim do Morro offers visitors a series of viewpoints and benches to sit for a moment and take in Porto’s scenery. This green park isn’t particularly large, but thanks to its prime location in Vila Nova de Gaia, it remains one of Porto’s most popular sunset spots.
The basics
While you may only need a moment at the Jardim do Morro to admire its view, most visitors find that a moment here can stretch out to minutes or even half an hour as you wait for sunset. A select few city tours include its viewpoint in their itinerary because it takes a detour to visit, but it’s a regular inclusion, understandably, for Porto photography tours and photo shoots. Follow up the park’s scenery with a ride on the Gaia Cable Car and sample some port wine at one of Vila Nova de Gaia’s many wine cellars.
Things to know before you go
Families will find the park has a children’s playground on its southern side.
If you’re planning a picnic at the park, several supermarkets are located towards the General Torres metro station.
The cable car from the waterfront (and its wine cellars) operates mid-morning until the early evening.
The main observation points and the park itself are accessible, with ramp access leading to them.
How to get there
The Jardim do Morro sits at the southern end of the Luís I Bridge in Vila Nova de Gaia. While you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to walk over the Luís I Bridge to get there, you can also take the D metro to the Jardim do Morro metro station. When coming from the waterfront below, take the Gaia Cable Car to the park rather than walk up the steep hill.
When to get there
There’s no beating the view of Porto offered by the Jardim do Morro at sunset, which is why it’s both the best and busiest time to visit. Expect the park to be especially busy on weekends as Porto locals have the time to also visit. The park offers little shade, so plan accordingly when going on a summer afternoon or rainy day.
Best sunset viewpoints in Porto
Porto is a city made for sunsets, with the sun sinking over the Douro River and lighting the sky on fire behind its staggered cityscape. The Jardim do Morro is one of several incredible viewpoints for this hour, while others include the Luís I Bridge and the Serra do Pilar Viewpoint, which overlooks the other two spots.
