Jasper SkyTram

Book a spot on the Jasper SkyTram and get ready for a spectacular 7-minute ride up the mountain. A guide is aboard each tramcar to point out landmarks and share information about the area as you glide over the alpine woodland. At the top, you can browse in the Upper Station gift shop, enjoy a meal overlooking the Canadian Rockies, or hike the 0.75-mile (1.2-kilometer) trail to the summit.

• Expect to spend about two hours on the adventure.

• The weather at the top of the mountain is much cooler than in town. Dress in layers and bring a jacket or windbreaker, even in the summer.

• The tram cars and lower level of the Upper Station are wheelchair accessible; the summit trail and upstairs restaurant are not.

The Jasper SkyTram is located 5 miles (8 kilometers) southwest of Jasper, Alberta. If you don’t have a vehicle, taxis, rental cars, and a shuttle are available from town. The road is steep, which makes hiking or mountain biking to the tram difficult.

The Jasper SkyTram is open from mid-March through October. The tram is open longer hours in the summer to accommodate the demand; visiting early or late means fewer crowds. Peak season is from the end of June through August, when the weather is best. If you’re visiting in shoulder season (March/April or September/October), be prepared to encounter winter conditions, which can hamper views.

Visitors to the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks often wonder if they should ride the Banff Gondola or the Jasper SkyTram. Each attraction offers a different experience. The Jasper SkyTram tends to experience less traffic, has larger cars, and is higher above sea level. The Banff Gondola underwent a renovation in 2017 and has several restaurants, a boardwalk at the top, and an interpretive center. If you have the time, enjoy both.
