Jehangir Art Gallery

161B Mahatma Gandhi Road, Fort, Mumbai, Maharashtra, 400001

Inaugurated in 1952, Jehangir Art Gallery is among India's foremost centers of contemporary art, exhibiting paintings, sculptures, photography, textile arts, and crafts. The gallery hosts upwards of 300 shows per year showcasing the works of established and emerging artists, along with all sorts of lectures and special programs.

The Basics

The gallery has seven exhibition halls, including an auditorium, plus an antique shop. It's among the best places to get a feel for the arts scene in India, and is an excellent starting point for travelers wanting to explore the many shops and galleries of the surrounding Kala Ghoda art district. Some South Mumbai walking tours pass by the gallery, and private tours will give you the option to go inside and peruse the art on display.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Jehangir Art Gallery is a must-visit for those wanting to learn more about India's contemporary art scene
  • The gallery is accessible via an exterior ramp, and strollers are permitted inside.
  • Photography and filming is not allowed in the gallery unless you have express permission from artists with work on display.

How to Get There

Jehangir Art Gallery is located in the Kala Ghoda art district in southern Mumbai just south of the High Court of Bombay. The nearest commuter railway station is Churchgate, around a 15-minute walk away. Most taxi and autorickshaw drivers will be familiar with the gallery, but if they aren't, just ask them to drop you at the Kala Ghoda (black horse) statue, which is right in front of the gallery.

When to Get There

Jehangir Art Gallery is open seven days a week from late morning until evening. If you can, try to time your visit to coincide with the annual Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, which lasts for nine days, starting the first Saturday in February. Information about other special events is available on the gallery's website.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

Right next to Jehangir Art Gallery, this museum—formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum—showcases one of the finest collections of art and artifacts in India. The museum has more than 50,000 items in its collection, ranging from Indus Valley archaeological finds to ancient religious sculptures. If you don't have time to go inside, at least pay a quick visit to the exterior to check out the ornate Indo-Saracenic exteriors.
