POINT OF INTEREST

Jekyll Island

Georgia

Once a popular getaway spot for wealthy American families (think Rockefellers and Pulitzers), Jekyll Island now attracts visitors with its wildlife, beaches, and golf courses. There are lots of ways to immerse yourself in the locale, from beachcombing to kayaking to taking a guided dolphin-watching tour out into the ocean.

Jekyll Island first made a name for itself back in 1888, with the launch of the exclusive Jekyll Island Club, which attracted well-to-do visitors until eventually closing during the Great Depression. Today, the club is part of the Historic District, a 240-acre (97-hectare) expanse with 33 historic buildings. Around 65 percent of the island is a protected natural area, and there are over 8 miles of white-sand beach.

  • Jekyll Island is a must-visit for history buffs, golfers, and wildlife lovers.

  • Pets are not permitted on the sand dunes.

  • The island is best explored by bicycle, and if you don’t have your own, there are plenty of spots where you can rent one.

The easiest way to get to Jekyll Island from mainland Georgia is by car, taking the M E Thompson Memorial Bridge across the East River. It's about a 90-minute drive from Savannah, and a 70-minute drive from Jacksonville, Florida. Note that you’ll need to pay a toll to take your car onto the island.

Jekyll Island is inviting year-round, though you'll experience the most pleasant temperatures if you visit in the spring or the fall. Summers can get hot, with a higher chance of rain than during other seasons. If you plan to do any beachcombing, you'll have the most success during low tide.

Jekyll Island has long been known for its golf courses, and there are plenty of spots here to tee off. Popular choices include the historic Jekyll Island Golf Club, which has three 18-hole courses, and the nine-hole Great Dunes Park Course. There are also a couple of fantastic options designed by Joe Lee: the championship-grade Indian Mount Course and the scenic Oleander Course.
