POINT OF INTEREST

Jerusalem Church (Jeruzalemkerk)

Peperstraat 3, Bruges, West Flanders, 8000

One of Bruges’ most distinct churches, the Jerusalem Church (Jeruzalemkerk) is part of the Adornes Estate, built by a wealthy merchant family 600 years ago, and still in the care of the family’s descendants. Consecrated in 1429 and said to be inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the chapel is an architectural standout.

The basics

Still used as the Adornes family’s private chapel today, the Jerusalem Church attracts visitors with its unusual features, including its stained-glass windows (which depict members of the family), its skull-bedecked altarpiece, and its striking tower. Ticketed entry to the Adornes Estate (including its small museum in the nearby almshouses, and the Peters Rooms, used for art exhibitions) includes access to the church, and it is also occasionally used to host public events, including classical music concerts and talks.

Things to know before you go

  • Owing to its historical architecture, only portions of the Adornes Estate, including the Jerusalem Church, are accessible to disabled visitors.
  • Children age 6 and under receive free admission, and a family pass provides free entry from the third child onwards.
  • Photography is forbidden inside the estate, as are large bags and backpacks.
  • The site’s Scottish Lounge serves hot and cold beverages and is a good place to relax after your visit.

How to get there

The Adornes Estate (including the Jerusalem Church), is located at 3 Peperstraat in central Bruges. It’s a 30-minute walk from the Bruges train station, or a 6-minute taxi ride away; there are also local bus lines that serve the area. That said, central Bruges is small and pedestrian-friendly, and it’s easy to access on foot.

When to get there

The estate is open daily, from morning until early evening, except on Sundays and public holidays. It also operates a Sunday mass service at 9am, which visitors are welcome to attend. It can be visited throughout the year, and its gardens and changing exhibitions reward repeat visits.

Historic churches of Bruges

The Jerusalem Church isn’t the only historic place of worship to discover in Bruges. Other highlights include the Church of Our Lady (which dates to the 13th century and is known for its soaring tower); the small, heavily ornamental Basilica of the Holy Blood; and the St. Salvator Cathedral.
