Juhu Beach
Mumbai, Maharashtra
Looking out over the Arabian Sea in an upscale Mumbai suburb, Juhu Beach is a 7-mile strip of golden sand that attracts locals and tourists alike with its pleasant weather and laid-back vibe. It's often used for Bollywood film shoots, and you may even spot one of the city's many movie stars who live in the area.
The Basics
While Juhu Beach isn't the type of place most people would go to sunbathe or swim (it's urban and not that clean), it's a fun place to chill out and escape some of the hullabaloo of Mumbai city life. The southern end is dominated by high-end hotels and restaurants, while farther north you'll find all sorts of attractions, including children's rides, along with food carts serving up every sort of street-food snack imaginable.
Things to Know Before You Go
Bring sunscreen and a parasol or a hat if you’re visiting on a sunny day.
Wear comfortable shoes or sandals, and be prepared for plenty of walking.
Swimming and sunbathing aren’t advisable, as the beach isn’t too clean.
Women who do plan to wear swimsuits should stick to a one-piece bathing suit or cover up with a T-shirt out of respect for local cultural norms.
How to Get There
Juhu Beach is situated around a 15-minute drive from the airport or 40 minutes from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in the heart of the city. For those not on a guided tour, the beach is easy to access by taxi, auto rickshaw, or bus. The nearest railway stations are Santacruz, Andheri, and Vile Parle.
When to Get There
Sunset is a great time to visit due to cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery. While Juhu Beach is accessible throughout the year, the best time to visit is between October and February, when temperatures are a little milder and the weather is dry. That said, it's also beautiful here during the monsoon months of July and August and into September; you may just have to pack an umbrella.
Mumbai Street Food
Street food is a big deal in Mumbai, with all sorts of spicy, savory snacks available from roadside (and beachside) vendors across the city. Popular items includepav bhaji, spiced potato curry served with dinner rolls, andbhel puri, a mix of puffed rice and spices garnished with chopped tomatoes, onions, coriander, and a squeeze of lemon.
