Junam Wetlands Park

Woljam-ri, Dong-eup, Gyeongsangnam-do

Home to hundreds of winged species, Junam Wetlands Park (Junam Jeosuji) is every birder’s dream. During winter, an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 birds enter the park daily, with white-naped cranes, spoonbills, swans, and mallards among the different types you may see. Its proximity to Busan makes it the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The basics

Considered the top birding destination in Korea, Junam Wetlands Park should be at the top of every wildlife enthusiast’s Busan itinerary. Amateur birders and travelers short on time may consider a guided excursion, which includes round-trip transportation, a tour of the park, and—in some cases—a visit to Haeinsa Temple. In addition, visitors can learn more about the park’s numerous species at the on-site Junam Eco-Learning Center, which presents guests with exhibits on the park’s birds, insects, and plant life.

Things to know before you go

  • There is no admission fee to enter Junam Wetlands Park.

  • Wooden boardwalks traversing the park make much of it wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.

  • July to August is the monsoon season in Busan, and visitors should dress accordingly, as heavy rain is frequent and difficult to predict.

How to get there

Junam Wetlands Park is located 27 miles (43 kilometers) from central Busan and can easily be reached by car. Those wishing to use public transportation can take a bus from Gimhae International Airport or a train from Busan Station to Changwon. From Changwon, travelers must take a short taxi ride to the park.

When to get there

October to April is the best time to visit Junam Wetlands Park to see the widest variety of wildlife. However, visitors can observe abundant wildlife year-round, with 5,000 migratory birds—including orioles, herons, and warblers—calling the park home for the summer.

Waterfalls, mountain views, and seaside vistas

Junam Wetlands Park isn’t the only place where you can enjoy natural attractions near Busan. A rewarding hike up Geumjeongsan Mountain, a peaceful walk through the Ahopsan and Gyerim forests, and a scenic cruise around the Oryukdo Islets are all at your fingertips.
