Hamburg’s grandest promenade, Jungfernstieg is a top spot for sightseeing and stylish shopping. Located along the Inner Alster Lake (Binnenalster), its name is inspired by the days when families would take their unmarried daughters (“Jungfern”) to walk along the promenade in a coming-of-age tradition.
The basics
Jungfernstieg is lined with many upscale boutiques and department stores selling high-end clothing, made-to-measure shoes, and jewelry. Among these is the Alsterhouse department store, in business since 1912 and one of the city’s most popular shopping destinations. There is also a wide selection of restaurants and cafés where you can stop for a meal with a view of the lake. The most atmospheric is Alex Hamburg; located inside the Alsterpavillon, it has been serving coffee and cakes since 1799.
Guided tours by foot and bike typically include a visit to Jungfernstieg. Boat tours of the lake are also available.
Things to know before you go
Many Hamburg stores and restaurants close on Sundays, so check before heading out.
Take cash with you when dining out—many restaurants accept cash only.
Tipping in Hamburg is not required, but many diners at upscale restaurants will leave 10 percent of the check.
On hot days, lines form outside Eis Warneke ice cream parlor; join the queue to enjoy a cooling sweet treat.
How to get there
Junfernstieg is located on the south side of the Inner Alster Lake. To get there, take U-Bahn lines U1, U2, or U4, or S-Sahn lines S1, S2, or S3 to Jungfernstieg station. If you’re driving, you will find paid parking in the multi-story Alsterhaus or Hanseviertel parking garages.
When to get there
The promenade is a pleasant place for strolling and window shopping at any time, but it’s at its liveliest on summer weekends when Hamburgers soak up the sun on the lake-side terrace. From mid-November to late December, Jungfernstieg hosts one of Hamburg’s best Christmas markets, where you can pick up goodies like souvenirs, jewelry, hot drinks, and warm cinnamon buns.
Shopping on Colonnaden
At its northern end, Jungfernstieg runs into Colonnaden, another of Hamburg’s most elegant shopping streets. The street is lined with Renaissance Revival buildings and is home to typically independent specialty boutiques selling everything from handmade jewelry to luxury stationery. There is also a good selection of restaurants, many of which offer al fresco dining in the warmer months.
