Kamigamo Shrine
339 Kamigamo Motoyama, Kita, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, 603-8047
Built in the year 678, Kamigamo Shrine (aka Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in the country. Although it predates Kyoto’s reign as capitol of Japan by over a century, it is believed to protect the city from negative influences. The shrine played host to four Emperors between the 8th and 18th centuries.
The basics
Of the shrine buildings, the 17th-century worship hall, or haiden, is the most famous. Visitors also tend to flock to two sand cones that rest in front of the shrine’s main building. These structures are said to protect and purify the grounds. It’s an interesting place to visit if you want to soak up the spiritual atmosphere, but if you’re interested in gaining a more in-depth understanding of its spiritual significance, you’re best off going with a guide or a tour.
Things to know before you go
*Kamigamo Shrine is a must-visit for travelers who want to get off the often times crowded beaten path. *You’ll need to remove your shoes before entering the main temple. *Much of the shrine and its grounds are not wheelchair or stroller-friendly.
How to get there
Kamigamo and its sister-shrine, Shimogamo, are situated in the ancient Tadasu no Mori, a preserved forest with trees that are over 600 years old. By train, the shrine can be reached in 30 minutes from Demachi-Yanagi Station or by a 15-mintue walk from Kitayama Station on the Karasuma Subway Line. By city bus, take #4 to the last stop, Kamigamojinja-mae.
When to get there
The shrine is open throughout the year. Kamigamo’s esteemed history is celebrated every year during Aoi Matsuri, one of Kyoto’s three biggest festivals, which is held on May 15th. To celebrate the festival, a large procession dressed in Imperial garb from the days of the Heian period marches to the shrine.
Shimogamo Shrine
Visitors to the Kamigamo Shrine sometimes pay a visit to its older sister shrine, Shimogamo, about a 10-minute drive away. This beautiful red shrine is flanked by forest and features beautiful pathways, impressive red tori gates, and peaceful courtyards and gardens. It’s dedicated to kami, or spirits/energies, associated with thunder.
