Kanto Lampo Waterfall

Jl. Kaliasem lingk.kelod kangin, Beng, Indonesia, 80513

One of several Instagram-famous waterfalls in the Ubud area, Kanto Lampo Waterfall tumbles over a toppling stack of dark rock tiers into a small river in a series of photogenic cascades. Scrambling up the rocks to pose among the slender streams can create spectacular shots and reels that look like you have the falls entirely to yourself.

The basics

Ubud is the easiest base for visiting Kanto Lampo Waterfall, but Bali is a compact island, and plenty of travelers visit on a day trip from south Bali. It’s not a common stop on Ubud tours and day trips, but many Bali Instagram tours and almost all Ubud waterfall tours swing by.

There’s a small charge to visit the falls, which is payable in rupiah cash on arrival. It’s about a 5-minute walk down fenced, well-signed, but occasionally slippery stairs to the falls proper, which you reach by walking in the river. The water isn’t deep enough for swimming, so the main activity is posing for photos. Expect a line. If you don’t have a guide, locals wait by the falls and can stand in the river and capture shots for you for a fee.

Things to know before you go

  • Kanto Lampo Waterfall is a popular choice for photographers and social media mavens.

  • The length of the Instagram line will likely dictate the amount of time you spend at the falls. At busy times, the wait for photos can be over an hour.

  • There are lockers to rent for a small fee and some stalls selling basics.

  • Locals sometimes process to Kanto Lampo Waterfall to collect water for Hindu ceremonies. It’s important to behave respectfully and allow them space.

  • The falls are not accessible for travelers who have mobility issues or use wheelchairs.

  • There’s no stroller access, and parents are unlikely to find the Kanto Lampo experience family-friendly.

How to get there

Kanto Lampo Waterfall sits about a 7-mile (12-kilometer) drive east of central Ubud. It’s not on public transit routes, and finding rideshares for your return journey can be challenging. It’s easiest—and much safer than self-driving—to join a tour or book a private driver for the day.

When to get there

Kanto Lampo Waterfall is generally open from soon after sunrise until late afternoon, and it’s best to get there as early as you can to beat the crowds. Like most Bali waterfalls, it’s highly weather-dependent. Visiting during the dry season (roughly April through October) is generally the smart choice: Heavy rains can flood the river, making it impossible to reach the falls.

Ubud’s most Instagrammable waterfalls

The highlands of north and central Bali offer a range of spectacular waterfalls, but the falls around Ubud are the island’s best-known. Tegenungan Waterfall roars over a 130-foot (40-meter) cliff into a lush gorge—with a day club, Omma Day Club, overlooking it. Tibumana Waterfall pours into a tranquil pool decked in jungle, which is rarely as blue as it appears on Instagram. On sunny mornings, rays of light illuminate Tukad Cepung Waterfall, a slim cascade that tumbles into a river between two cave-like cliffs, creating spectacular effects.
