Karama Market

The basics

Located in one of Dubai’s oldest neighborhoods, Karama Market provides a breath of fresh air for travelers who’ve had enough of the malls and skyscrapers. It's full of independently owned shops and fantastic restaurants, many of which specialize in South Asian cuisines. There are also quite a few beauty salons, plus a small, kid-friendly park. The market features on plenty of Dubai shopping tours, and going with a guide is a great way to avoid getting lost or = ripped off.

How to get there

Karama Market is easy to reach using public transportation: Take the Red Line of the Dubai Metro to the ADCB/Al Karama station, and you'll be in the heart of the action. You can also get a taxi or rideshare vehicle through apps such as Uber, Careem, and Wheely or take a tour that includes pickup from your hotel.

When to get there

Al Karama is open daily from morning until well into the evening, except for Fridays when the market's shops open in mid-afternoon. Get there first thing in the morning for the best deals, or come in the evening to people-watch and mingle with the crowds.

Finding Dubai souvenirs

Dubai is full of great souvenirs beyond fancy gold jewelry and designer handbags. Spices, sweets, Bedouin daggers (known as khanjars), and shawls make great mementos, as do glass Arabesque lanterns. Another popular souvenir is Arabian Oud, a traditional perfume in an aromatic blend of sandalwood, rose, saffron, and jasmine.
