Maharashtra’s compact Karnala Bird Sanctuary is a protected greenspace that provides a habitat for hundreds of species of birds, monkeys, antelope, and butterflies. It's also the site of Karnala Fort, also known as Funnel Hill, a popular trekking destination among day-trippers from Mumbai.
The basics
Whether you plan to hike or just want to do a bit of light birdwatching, your best bet for visiting the bird sanctuary is to join a tour. Tours typically depart from Mumbai and include guide services (a must for hiker safety) and transportation. Some tours also include a stop for lunch along the way.
Things to know before you go
Wear sun protection and bring plenty of water, especially if you plan to hike.
Photographers should pack a good zoom lens, and all visitors should carry binoculars if they have them.
Karnala Bird Sanctuary is not wheelchair-friendly.
How to get there
Karnala Bird Sanctuary is located in Maharashtra, about an hour's drive east of Mumbai and a 1.5–2-hour drive from Matheran. The best way to get there is by joining a tour that includes transportation (tours typically depart from Mumbai) or by hiring a taxi. The nearest railway station to the sanctuary is in Jite, a 20-minute drive away.
When to get there
The best time to visit Karnala Bird Sanctuary is during the dry season, not only because the park is more pleasant when it's not raining but also because it is a better bird-watching time. October–February is particularly ideal, while the June–September monsoon season is best avoided. Come early to avoid crowds and see birds at their most active.
Birding in Bhandup
If you're short on time but still want to do some birdwatching, consider visiting Bhandup, in the northern Mumbai suburbs, instead. This popular spot among urban birders draws in species ranging from egrets to bulbuls, and getting there from most parts of Mumbai takes less than an hour.
