POINT OF INTEREST

Katoomba Falls

Blue Mountains Tourist Park, Katoomba, New South Wales, 2780

Located between Echo Point and Scenic World, Katoomba Falls is one of the most popular and accessible waterfalls in New South Wales’ Blue Mountains. A beautiful, segmented waterfall, Katoomba Falls drops about 492 feet (150 meters) in two main stages into Jamison Valley and can be viewed from a number of lookouts in the area.

The Basics

There are a number of ways to view Katoomba Falls. The easiest is to take the Scenic Skyway, which gives visitors a view of the falls in addition to other scenic highlights such as the Three Sisters and Jamison Valley. There are also a range of hikes, ranging from the easy Prince Henry Scenic Walk to the challenging Furber Steps (which includes nearly 1,000 steps). Visitors also have the option of hiking down the falls, then taking the Scenic Railway back up.

Most travelers visit Katoomba Falls from Sydney, either independently or on a guided tour to the Blue Mountains, which can also be combined with visits to Featherdale Wildlife Park or a cruise down the Parramatta River. Popular upgrades include admission to Scenic World and its Scenic Skyway, Scenic Railway, and Scenic Walkway.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Katoomba Falls is ideal for nature lovers, waterfall chasers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Don’t forget your camera to capture the falls and stunning vistas throughout the Blue Mountains.

  • Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and bring sun protection and plenty of water if you plan to hike the falls.

  • Full-day tours from Sydney can last upwards of 10 hours.

How to Get There

Katoomba Falls is located in the Blue Mountains, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) west of Sydney. It’s about a 90-minute drive from downtown Sydney. To arrive by public transport, take the train from central Sydney to Katoomba, then take a bus or taxi the rest of the way.

When to Get There

Katoomba Falls can be visited year-round. The Australian summer (December to March) usually sees the most rain, which gives the falls a faster and fuller flow. Spring and fall are the most pleasant times to hike.

Area Lookouts

There are numerous vista points from which you can catch a glimpse of the falls. The easiest to reach is Reid’s Plateau, located just a short distance from Katoomba Kiosk. Lookouts that require more effort include Juliet’s Balcony and Katoomba Falls Lookout. Other area lookouts that offer different, but also wonderful, views include Vaniman’s Lookout and Rainforest Lookout.
