Flowing 82 miles (132 kilometers from its source in the Kenai Mountains to the Cook Inlet of the Pacific Ocean, the Kenai River is chock-full of salmon and trout making it the most popular sport fishing destination in Alaska. Each summer, millions of salmon return to the river from the Pacific Ocean to spawn in the same streams they were born in.Â

Fishing is the main draw to the Kenai River and the river has sections perfect for beginners and expert fishers alike. Fishing fans are not the only ones drawn to the Kenai River during the salmon run; bald eagles and brown bears are often seen feasting on the abundant fish found here.Â

How to get there
The Kenai River runs along the Kenai Peninsula in south central Alaska. Many guided fishing trips head out from Coopers Landing, which is 102 miles (164 kilometers) south of Anchorage and 48 miles (77 kilometers) north of Seward just off the Seward Highway.Â
When to get there
May through September is the best time to fish on the Kenai River with July and August being the most popular time. The king (Chinook) salmon begin running in mid-May and tend to run a second time in mid-July. The red (sockeye) salmon tend to run in early June and mid-July and pink salmon run in even years only. October is prime trout fishing season.
