Kenya National Archives

Moi Avenue, Nairobi, Kenya

Far more than just a home to archives and public records, the National Archives in Nairobi also exhibit everything from traditional art to stamps, weapons, and photography. Visitors can explore the small on-site museum, spend a quiet hour paging through a newspaper, or check out the archives’ collection of rare books from across Africa.

The Basics

Along with the actual archives, the National Archives building contains a small but interesting museum that’s spread across two floors. Convenient to other downtown attractions—such as the August 7th Memorial Park and the Kenyatta Mausoleum—the National Archives are included on many guided tours of the city center.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The National Archives are a great stop for history buffs and book lovers.

  • Many of the archives’ most interesting holdings are drawn from the collection of former Vice President Joseph Murumbi.

  • Don’t miss the architecture on your way in—the grandiose building was once the Bank of India.

How to Get There

The National Archives are located on Moi Avenue in downtown Nairobi, where the street intersects with City Hall Way. Nearby bus stops include Ambassadeur and Buruburu, and taxis are easily available. Many guided tours of the National Archives offer the convenience of pickup and drop-off at Nairobi hotels, which can save time in transit.

When to Get There

Open from Monday through Saturday, the National Archives are an inviting place to pass a couple of hours downtown. Since the archives are less frequented than other attractions in downtown Nairobi, there’s no bad time to arrive, but try to budget at least an hour to visit the museum.

Sights Near the National Archives

If you’re visiting the National Archives and would like to explore downtown Nairobi, start by strolling down Moi Avenue toward August 7th Memorial Park, which marks the site of a 1998 bombing. Next, turn right down Haile Selassie Avenue, passing a series of government offices on your way to Parliament Road. There, make a right to walk toward the Kenya Parliament Buildings and the Kenyatta Mausoleum, where you can turn right again to return to the National Archives.
