King Tut Museum
Sharm Al Shiekh, Egypt, 8763011
Ancient Egypt’s boy king Tutankhamun was only around 18 when he died 3,300 years ago, but his story has fascinated travelers since Howard Carter first discovered his tomb. The King Tut Museum, set in Sharm el Sheikh’s Genena City mall, tells his story in a compact space, with around 130 replica artifacts and photos beautifully displayed.
The basics
There’s a significant charge to visit the King Tut Museum, which is rarely busy, so there’s no need to book tickets in advance. Its collection of replicas will likely not impress travelers who’ve spent time admiring the real deal in Cairo or Luxor’s world-class museums, and the shopping mall context lacks historical resonance. However, it’s still a decent option for families to get a handle on the period without the expense of leaving Sharm el Sheikh.
Things to know before you go
The King Tut Museum is an option for people who won’t visit Cairo, Luxor, or Aswan to discover the world of ancient Egypt.
Most travelers find 15–30 minutes is enough to discover the museum.
Audio guides are available in various languages, or you can take a guided tour.
How to get there
The King Tut Museum is inside the Genena City mall in Sharm el Sheikh’s Naama Bay area. You can enter it from the mall or through its own entrance. Sharm el Sheikh’s public transit systems are not well-developed for travelers, and neither Uber nor Careem operates in the city, so your best options are to take a taxi, book a private driver, or join a tour.
When to get there
The Genena City mall is open from late morning until around midnight seven days a week; the museum operates similar hours but usually closes earlier.
Sharm el Sheikh for history buffs
Sharm el Sheikh is a resort city, and no one comes for history, but the Sinai Peninsula is portrayed extensively in the Bible. From fossils in the desert to Mt. Sinai, where some believe Moses received the Ten Commandments, history buffs have plenty of options. No history enthusiast visiting Sharm should miss St. Catherine’s Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s the world’s oldest still-working monastery. Tours generally include a Mt. Sinai climb, too. Or, head to the Sharm el-Sheikh Museum for an extensive collection of genuine ancient Egyptian artifacts.
