POINT OF INTEREST

Kings Park & Botanic Garden

Fraser Avenue, Perth, Western Australia, 6005

The Central Park of Perth, Kings Park & Botanic Garden boasts a hilltop perch with views of the Swan River and city skyline. Locals and visitors flock here for picnics and walks amid wildflowers, bushland, landscaped gardens, and historic memorials.

The basics

As one of Perth’s top attractions, Kings Park is part of many city tour itineraries, including Segway tours, and can be seen from the water on a Swan River cruise. The park is also a stop on hop-on, hop-off bus tours. With its location in the city center just west of the Central Business District (CBD), it’s easy to visit during a day of sightseeing.

The park’s 1,000 acres (405 hectares) are home to grassy lawns, hundreds of species of native vegetation in the bushland sections and botanic garden, playgrounds for kids, and Western Australian trees such as karri and jarrah. One of the most popular features is the Federation Walkway, a series of paths and an arched bridge that take you through the treetops and gardens, past Aboriginal art, and along viewpoints of the Swan River.

Things to know before you go

*The visitor center is near the Fraser Avenue entrance and offers brochures and maps.

*Free guided walks led by volunteers take place daily from the visitor center.

*Cafés, restaurants, and galleries can be visited in the park.

How to get there

Free buses run to Fraser Avenue on the northeast side of the park from the CBD, or you can walk there in about 20 minutes from St. George’s Terrace. Free parking is available in the park.

When to get there

Springtime is known for wildflowers in Western Australia, and the Kings Park Festival in September celebrates the state’s native blooms. In the summer (December to February), popular events include Shakespeare in the Park and outdoor movies during Moonlight Cinema.

Jacob’s Ladder

On the eastern edge of Kings Park, a 242-step staircase runs up the aptly named Cliff Street. A regular part of many local fitness routines, the steps offer a panoramic view over the city and river at the top—the reward for making the long climb.
