Knidos (Cnidus)

The basics

Today, you can see the ruins of the agora, temples, a sundial, an altar, a theater, a sanctuary, and a Byzantine church. Knidos’ most impressive features are undoubtedly its necropolis and amphitheater, which could seat 5,000 people in its heyday. Though the British Museum now displays many of Knidos’ statues and artifacts, including the famous Lion of Knidos, there’s still plenty to see—day trips to Datça typically include a guided tour of the archaeological site, with tours helping to bring the ruins to life and offering crucial historical context.

Things to know before you go

• Signage is limited, so it’s worth reading about the history of the site before you go or exploring with a guide.

• You can enjoy great views of the Aegean Sea from the site, so be sure to bring your camera.

• Bring plenty of water and snacks, and wear a sun hat—the archaeological site’s remote location means there’s little shade and few places to buy refreshments.

How to get there

If driving, Knidos is approximately a 2-hour ride from Marmaris via the D400 state road. Buses can also get you from the Marmaris bus terminal to Datça; once there, you can take a taxi the rest of the way or hop on a minibus heading to Knidos. Alternatively, you can take a boat to Knidos from Datça.

When to get there

Knidos is open daily from early morning until early evening; the ticket office closes 30 minutes before the site shuts down for the day. Put aside around one hour to explore the ruins, and aim to visit a few hours either side of midday, when the sun is at its zenith.

Exploring the historic town of Datça

The small and sleepy town of Datça provides respite from the bustle of Bodrum and Marmaris and offers a glimpse into authentic Turkish culture. A cobbled promenade runs alongside the town’s sandy beach and is lined with seafood restaurants serving fish fresh from the Aegean Sea. The historic Old Datça (Eski Datça) also boasts plenty of Instagram-worthy spots.
