POINT OF INTEREST

Kokomo Beach

Willemstad, Curaçao

Located on the west side of the Caribbean island of Curacao, Kokomo Beach offers laid-back vibes, turquoise waters, and lounge chairs positioned in the shade of palm trees—a true idyllic tropical getaway. There’s also a professional dive center here for those who want to explore the waters off the coast, which boast plenty of tropical fish and coral gardens.

The basics

Join a guided tour or buggy excursion from Willemstad to Kokomo Beach and other popular spots in Curacao. If you plan to visit on your own, check out the dive shop that provides gear rentals, courses, and guided dives. The underwater landscape features shallow coral gardens and deeper reef formations. An on-site restaurant serves sandwiches, burgers, salads, wraps, and more. And a short hike to the nearby ruins of Fort Vaersenbaai lets you get a bird’s-eye view of Kokomo Beach.

Things to know before you go

  • Showers and restrooms are available at the beach.
  • Heading toward Kokomo, you’ll drive past Salina Sint Michiel, a large salt flat that is often home to a flock of flamingos. Many guided tours stop here on the way to the beach.
  • Kokomo Beach is suitable for divers of all experience levels.
  • The beach is free to access, although you will be charged to use the loungers.

How to get there

Kokomo Beach is about a 15- to 20-minute drive from Willemstad and is best assessed by car (major car rental chains are at the airport) or guided tour from Willemstad. Parking here is free, but lots can get crowded during peak times, so aim to get here early. Public transportation and taxis are limited outside Willemstad.

When to get there

On Sundays, Kokomo Beach hosts a happy hour with live music. It’s also known for its full moon parties, which take place a few times a year. Overall, winter and early spring are the busiest seasons to visit Curacao. If you can handle the heat, August is an excellent time to visit, especially if you want to go snorkeling and dolphin spotting.

Blue Bay Beach

A favorite among families and locals as well as cruise ship passengers, Curacao’s Blue Bay Beach is similar to Kokomo, boasting azure waters and plenty of amenities like a playground, showers, and kayak and Jet Ski rentals. Plus, the coral reef that sits just offshore attracts scuba divers and snorkelers.
