Kokrobite
Accra, Ghana
Bohemian beach town meets surfing hotspot at Kokrobite, a coastal community about an hour north of Accra. It’s grown from a thriving fishing village into a popular day trip from Accra, and is a destination in its own right for anyone in search of a slower pace.
The basics
Thanks to its consistent break and uncrowded lineup, Kokrobite is one of Ghana’s top surf destinations for locals and visitors alike—and a great place for first-time surfers to get their feet wet. Rent a board or take lessons at one of the town’s local surf shops to experience Kokrobite’s biggest attraction.
Kokrobite is also known for its arts and culture. Check out murals and galleries, or even take a workshop to try traditional crafts like batik fabric dyeing. After sunset, duck into local bars and hostels for a taste of the town’s laid-back party scene, letting the sound of live reggae music guide your way.
Things to know before you go
Bring plenty of cash: Many Kokrobite businesses don’t accept credit cards and ATMs are sparse. Your closest option may be outside of town.
Kokrobite is a popular weekend destination for people who live in Accra. If you’re planning a weekend trip, book in advance for the best accommodation options.
Lots of backpackers include Kokrobite on their itinerary. You’ll find plenty of budget lodging that appeals to a younger demographic in addition to some higher-end and family-friendly options. Check out reviews if you’re after a specific vibe.
How to get there
Kokrobite is located about an hour north of Accra and is most easily accessed by taxi. While there is no direct transit line from Accra to Kokrobite, you can save some money by catching a bus for the first leg: Take the 388 line from Circle Overhead to Shoprite, then transfer to a taxi for the last 15 minutes of your journey.
When to get there
If you’re hoping to surf in Kokrobite, plan your visit between April and September. This is when you’ll get the biggest swells—and also the least crowds, as it falls during Ghana’s wet season. However, note that businesses may close during the month-long Homowo festival, which typically falls in late summer. Be sure to check the dates for Homowo when planning your trip.
How to visit Kokrobite as a day trip
While most visitors plan to spend a few days surfing and relaxing in Kokrobite, those with limited time can easily visit as a day trip from Accra or Cape Coast. Plan to leave early to beat traffic on your way out of either city. If you have a reliable ride back, such as a private transfer, then staying to watch the sunset could be the cherry on top of a perfect day.
