POINT OF INTEREST

Kolb Studio

Village Loop Drive, Grand Canyon Village, AZ, 86023

Perched right on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, the Kolb Studio was built by the Kolb brothers in 1906. Since then, the 5-story building has served as a photo studio and home, and more recently, as an art gallery, bookstore, and information center. The site hosts frequent exhibitions and offers panoramic canyon views.

The basics

You can visit the Kolb Studio while at Grand Canyon Village, as part of a sightseeing tour, a self-guided driving tour of the park, or independently. Admire the art, photo, and history exhibits inside, then step out onto the patio to take in the panoramic views. Guided tours of the residence and photo studio are offered several times a week.

Things to know before you go

  • The Kolb Studio is a must-see for photographers, art lovers, and history buffs.

  • Art and other exhibits at the studio are free and open to the public. Tours of the residence and photo studio require an additional fee.

  • The studio is not wheelchair accessible.

How to get there

The Kolb Studio is in the western part of Grand Canyon Village, next to the Bright Angel Trailhead. From the Hermit Road Interchange for the shuttle bus, it’s a short walk east to the studio. Several parking options are available nearby in the village. A number of Grand Canyon sightseeing tours include a stop at the Kolb Studio and provide transportation from Las Vegas, Flagstaff, or Sedona.

When to get there

The Kolb Studio is open daily, starting in the morning; visit earlier in the day for a quieter experience and better lighting for photos. Guided tours of the Kolb Residence and Photo Studio are offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and last around one hour. The studio hosts several annual events, including the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art and Plein Air at the Canyon, in September.

Verkamp’s Visitor Center

At the opposite end of Grand Canyon Village from the Kolb Studio is Verkamp’s Visitor Center, a building that was originally Verkamp’s Curios. Built in 1906, after the railroad reached the South Rim, it was a family-run business that sold items including luxury goods and Native American arts and crafts. Now at this historic site, you can see exhibits, stop at the information desk, and head to the shop for books and gifts.
