Kolossi Castle

Kolossi Castle is a former crusader stronghold from the late 12th century though the structure itself was built during the 13th century and founded by the Knights Hospitaller (also known as the Order of St. John. The three-story tower is one of the more striking remnants from Cypress’ medieval era.
The Basics
After a tumultuous history of being passed from one conquering army to the next, Kolossi Castle remains wonderfully preserved. Though what remains of the fortress is a 69-feet (21-meters) tall stone tower, you can still see the foundational remains of the structure, and the view from the top of the building offers spectacular views of the surrounding vineyards.
The castle is still famous to this day for its production of a sweet dessert wine called Commandaria, which is considered to be one of the world’s oldest manufactured wines. (It was even drunk during King Richard the Lionheart’s wedding to a Spanish princess.) Wander the grounds and you’ll find evidence of ancient wine production with equipment such as remains of a millstone and aqueduct system.

- Some tours are wheelchair accessible, though not all so plan ahead.
- Wear sturdy and comfortable shoes as the ground may be uneven.
- If you need a break, take a seat on a bench in the garden.
- There are places to eat nearby in the village of Kolossi.
How to Get There
Kolossi Castle is located on the southwest edge of Kolossi village. The castle is roughly 15 minutes west of Limassol and 43 minutes east of Paphos. It is best reached by car. Most guided visits to the fortress are included in day-trip packages from Limassol and Paphos, and include transportation.
When to Get There
Kolossi Castle is open daily though hours vary by season. From mid-September to mid-April the site is open 8:30am to 5pm, and from mid-April to mid-September from 8:30am to 7:30pm. The castle is closed during major holidays. For the least amount of crowds consider going mid-week, and to escape Cypress’ heat explore the structure in the morning or evening.
What Exactly is Commandaria?
The ancient fortified wine gets its name from the word “commanderie,” which was used to refer to Kolossi Castle as the main military headquarters. Records of the sweet, amber-colored wine date back to 800 BC, and is made with grapes that are left to over ripen on the vine so sugar content can increase in the fruit.
