Kourion Archaeological Site

The Basics

Evidence seems to suggest that Kourion was related to the Greek legend of Argos of Peloponnese and its inhabitants were descendents of ancient Ageans. Excavations of the archaeological site revealed a complex and sophisticated city complete with a Roman Forum, public baths, and aristocratic estates.

Highlights of the area include the House of Eustolios, a richly decorated villa with mosaic floors, and the impressive Greco-Roman theater, which was built in the 2nd century BC and used until 2nd century AD when it was destroyed by the first of five massive earthquakes. Although inhabitants attempted the rebuild part of the city, and were resettled by early Christians, the once flourishing kingdom was eventually abandoned in the 7th century AD.

Things to Know Before You Go

• There are several other structures to see while at Kourion, including the House of the Gladiators and the House of Achilles, as well as one of the largest nymphaea in the Roman Mediterranean during the 2nd and 3rd centuries.
• Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat as this is a completely outdoor ruin complex with no real shade.
• Pack a snack or something to eat as some tours do not provide food.
• Since it is an archaeological site please do not touch or take anything in the complex.
• The stadium is located approximately 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) west of the main city.

How to Get There

Located on the southwest coast of Cyprus, Kourion is roughly 16 minutes west of Limassol, and lies within the boundaries of the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia. It is best reached by car, though most guided tours provide transportation to and from the site.

When to Get There

Consider planning your visit during the summer as the amphitheater is still used for concerts and plays when weather permits. The site is open daily though hours vary by season. From mid-September to mid-April it is open 8:30am to 5pm, and from mid-April to mid-September from 8:30am to 7:30pm. The Kourion ruins are closed during major holidays.

Visit Kolossi Castle

A short drive from Kourion is Kolossi Castle, an ancient medieval stronghold that dates back to the crusades. This well preserved fortress was once home to several different factions of knights including the Hospitallists and Templars, and is well known for making Commandaria—an ancient fortified wine.
