Kuala Lumpur Railway Station
110 Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, City Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 50000
Not to be confused with the city’s transportation hub, Kuala Lumpur Sentral Railway Station, the old Kuala Lumpur train station is a classic example of colonial Anglo-Asian architecture. Completed in 1910, horseshoe arches, bell-shaped domes, and airy pavilion roofs give Kuala Lumpur Railway Station an almost fairytale effect.
The basics
Standing across from the almost equally grand Malayan Railway Administration Building, Arthur Benison Hubback’s dramatic architecture makes the old station one of Kuala Lumpur’s standout landmarks. Surprisingly, the interior has a classic British iron and glass roof. Most Kuala Lumpur city tours pass by here, often with a photo stop, or you can pick up a hop-on hop-off bus tour. The KTM Komuter commuter rail service still visits the station, but Malaysian intercity trains arrive at KL Sentral.
Things to know before you go
- There are plenty of food options in and around Kuala Lumpur Railway Station.
- Downtown Kuala Lumpur, including the old railway station area, is stroller friendly.
- A wheelchair needn’t stop you from seeing Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. For travel, however, KL Sentral is much more accessible.
How to get there
As you would expect, Kuala Lumpur Railway Station sits in the heart of downtown Kuala Lumpur. Catch the KTM Komuter service from Kuala Lumpur Sentral station, or walk northwest for about a mile (1.5 kilometers). It’s an easy stroll from Chinatown.
When to get there
The Kuala Lumpur Railway Station looks good at every time of day, but you may want to avoid the morning and evening rush hours.
Heritage Highlights of Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur Railway Station uses a style called Indo-Saracenic, developed when the British ruled India, with elements from Moorish and Indian architecture. The architect’s other Kuala Lumpur buildings include the opulent, brick-built Jamek Mosque (Masjid Jamek), the old post office, and the Railway Administration Building. For a dose of authentic Malay heritage, visit the Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman (sometimes known as the Malay House), or take a walking tour of the Kampung Baru area.
