Kulaniapia Falls
Hilo, HI
Kulaniapia Falls, on the Big Island, is an exclusive experience: It’s on private property, offering a fabulous view for day visitors and overnight guests. The owners have turned this Hawaiian spot into a full-fledged experience, complete with multiple accommodation options, rappelling, walking trails, and cooking classes. With limited crowds, many visitors say the price tag is worth it.
The basics
Kulaniapia Falls is 120 feet (36.5 meters) high, making it considerably taller than the famous—and public—Rainbow Falls, about 20 minutes away. Visitors can see this misty scene one of three ways: by purchasing a day pass, which gives you full access to the lush grounds and trails for about four hours; by booking an experience, such as a cooking class, farm tour, or waterfall rappel; or by staying overnight at one of several on-site accommodations.
If this waterfall is on your list, there are many options to suit your schedule, budget, and desire for thrills.
Things to know before you go
Day visitors must purchase their pass online in advance—walk-ins are not allowed.
If you’re visiting for the day, you’re encouraged to bring your own towel, snacks, water, lunch, and anything else you might need.
Day visitors receive discounts on all activities, from chef’s table dinners to SUP rentals.
Overnight guests have full access to the falls and grounds, no day pass necessary.
How to get there
Kulaniapia Falls is west of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. To get there, it’s about a 15-minute drive from downtown Hilo. Follow Waianuenue Avenue, then turn onto Kaumana Drive and continue to Kulaniapia Road. Access is via The Inn at Kulaniapia Falls, so a reservation or day pass is required for entry.
When to get there
Entry times to Kulaniapia Falls range from morning to afternoon—visitors at the opening time slot get a discount (and it’s typically less crowded then). There’s no bad time to visit, so long as you allow yourself enough time to explore. Most visitors tend to stay about two hours, but your day pass is good for up to four hours.
Water, water everywhere
Kulaniapia Falls is an incredibly beautiful spot, but it’s just one of the region’s many waterfalls. From Rainbow Falls to Akaka Falls to Umauma Falls, the island has more than its fair share of cascading wonders—many are in state parks, and some are totally free to visit. The easiest way to catch the best ones is on a waterfall tour, most of which run year-round, departing from Hilo.
