POINT OF INTEREST

Kunsthalle Wien Museumsquartier

Museumsplatz 1, Vienna, Vienna, 1070

Even in a city packed with great museums, the Kunsthalle stands apart with globe-spanning contemporary art designed to spark conversations. Locations in both the Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz mean there’s a lot to see, and wide-ranging exhibitions ensure the experience varies from one visit to the next.

The basics

Surrounded by some of Vienna’s top sites, the Museumsquartier location is the Kunsthalle’s principal attraction, featuring a big, open exhibition space for single-artist shows and more conceptual events. The Karlsplatz Kunsthalle is a much smaller glass pavilion that hosts events and shows. Since the Museumsquartier is an included stop on many hop-on, hop-off tours of Vienna, the Kunsthalle is easy to fit into a day of exploring. Holders of the Vienna City Card get discounted admission.

Things to know before you go

*Guided tours can make the art even more accessible; check the website for a schedule.

*The Museumsquartier location is free for visitors 18 and under, and free on Thursday evenings. Its exhibition rooms, restaurant/café, and some restrooms are wheelchair accessible.

*The Karlsplatz location is free to visit.

How to get there

Located at Museumsplatz 1, the main location of the Kunsthalle is walking distance from a long list of sites. The nearby underground stations Museumsquartier and Volkstheater can be reached on the U2 and U3 subway lines. Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz is located at Treitlstrasse 2, close to the Karlsplatz underground station on the U1, U2, and U4 lines.

When to get there

With plenty of room to spread out, the Kunsthalle Wien rarely feels crowded, so there’s no bad time to stop by. Both locations have cafés with outdoor seating, making them popular destinations on sunny days.

The Kunsthalle Wien Café and Restaurant

If you’re visiting both Kunsthalle locations, you can choose between two places to dine, both of which attract a mix of locals and visitors. In the Museumsquartier, the lively Café Restaurant Halle serves a popular brunch menu, as well as sandwiches, salads, and other light mains. In Karlsplatz, the Heuer Am Karlsplatz is a stylish restaurant/bar that extends through a garden and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner; cocktails are also a highlight.
