POINT OF INTEREST

La Isabela

Calle Profesor Juan Bosch 77, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, 87000

One of the oldest European settlements in the New World, La Isabela was founded by Christopher Columbus in his second voyage in 1493. The remnants of Columbus' time in the colony—meant to establish a Spanish presence in the West Indies—can be seen at La Isabela National Park, which contains a few notable structures and artifacts.

The basics

Columbus didn't find much success on La Isabela, and the colony was abandoned in 1498. Today the remnants are part of La Isabela National Park. In addition to a few structures—walls that were likely part of Columbus’ home, the church where the first New World mass was conducted, and an observation tower—there is a small museum on site with artifacts unearthed during the excavations. The beach at Playa El Castillo is also of note.

Things to know before you go

  • Roads may flood, so renting a 4WD vehicle is best if you drive.

  • Many visitors prefer to visit in the dry season, which runs from December to April.

  • You'll get a better sense of history if you visit the museum at La Isabela National Park.

How to get there

Located on the banks of the Bajabonico River, about 28 miles (45 kilometers) west of Puerto Plata on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, La Isabela is about a 4-hour drive from Santo Domingo via Duarte Highway. Be sure to rent a 4WD vehicle since the road is bumpy and you may encounter river flooding.

When to get there

La Isabela National Park is open daily. Expect the largest crowds between December and March, which is considered the best time to visit the Dominican Republic. However, because La Isabela is located further away from popular cities like Punta Cana and Santo Domingo, it doesn’t attract as many tourists as other sites.

Playa El Castillo

While not the most popular beach in the Dominican Republic, this stretch of coastline near La Isabela is a convenient stop when visiting the old settlement town. The usually quiet beach features amenities like sun umbrellas, a restaurant, and restrooms, as well as water activities such as catamarans and Jet Skis.
