POINT OF INTEREST

La Turbie

Cote d’Azur, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, 06320

The village of La Turbie is just outside Monaco, yet it feels another world away. Those looking for a taste of old Provence will find it in La Turbie’s medieval Old Town; plus, there are French Riviera vistas aplenty from the Trophy of the Alps. The Roman monument was built around 7BC and is La Turbie’s star sight.

The basics

There’s no shortage of day trips and shore excursions to La Turbie; options depart from Nice, Monaco, Cannes, and Villefranche. These work well for transport-free visitors who want to see several places along the French Riviera without the fuss of public transport. In La Turbie itself, the highlight is the Trophy of the Alps (Trophée des Alpes). If you want to enter the monument, note that it’s closed each Monday and it shuts for a few hours at lunchtime, like many smaller French attractions.

Things to know before you go

  • Put aside at least an hour to explore La Turbie Old Town and see the Trophy of Augustus.

  • La Turbie makes a good base for hikers who want easy access to the coastal trails around the National Park of the Grand Corniche.

  • There are several public restrooms in and around the village of La Turbie.

How to get there

La Turbie is easy to reach from Nice or Monaco, and makes a pleasant stop-off during a drive along the Grand Corniche; parking lots are available in the village center. Otherwise, public bus 116 runs between Nice and La Turbie, or there’s bus 114 between Monaco and La Turbie. The village has no train station.

When to get there

The summer months between June and September bring the sunniest weather to town, along with higher prices and more people. For a slightly cheaper, quieter visit, consider coming in the fall. Runners might want to visit in early December when the Trail of La Turbie takes place. This popular running event offers three different routes with sweeping sea and mountain views.

Where to enjoy panoramic views in La Turbie

La Turbie is known as a great place for Monaco panoramas. On a clear day, visit the lookout point known as Tête de Chien (Dog’s Head) by following a signposted trail on a 20-minute walk from the village. The trail boasts coastal views along the way, and vistas that stretch over Monaco, Eze, and Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat from the top.
