Lac Cai
Bonaire, Caribbean
Lac Cai is a picturesque inlet beach in the southeastern part of the Caribbean island of Bonaire. Known for its serene, shallow waters, piles of conch shells, and mangrove forests, it’s a favorite for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing away from the crowds. While it’s not the easiest beach to reach, Lac Cai is worth the effort.
The basics
Join a guided tour of Lac Cai that includes activities such as swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking, or paddleboarding. Because it’s in a protected bay with shallow waters, it’s the perfect spot for adventurers of all skill levels, especially beginners. Visitors can explore the vibrant marine life offshore or simply enjoy the quiet sandy beach. The nearby mangroves also make for a great outdoor excursion for nature lovers.
Things to know before you go
Swimming with fins is prohibited in the waters of Lac Cai.
Keep in mind that there are no lifeguards.
On the way to the beach, be on the lookout for flamingos and wild donkeys.
Lac Cai is under the protection of the Bonaire National Marine Park.
How to get there
You’ll find Lac Cai at the end of Kaminda Lac, along an unpaved road that’s best navigated in a 4-wheel drive. From Kralendijk, drive east on Kaminda Sorobon (the main road), followed by Kaminda Lac; it takes about 20 minutes. Guided tours typically offer round-trip transportation and are the most convenient option.
When to get there
The best time to visit Bonaire is during the dry season, from December to April. During this period, the weather is sunny and pleasant with lower humidity and minimal rainfall—excellent for outdoor activities. This is also when Bonaire sees the most visitors. If you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices, the off-season from May to November is a good option.
Sorobon Beach
Just across Lac Bay, opposite Lac Cai, Sorobon Beach is known for its shallow, clear waters and beautiful surroundings. Ideal for swimming and relaxing, the beach is also perfect for beginner windsurfers due to its gentle waters. If you’re looking for a livelier atmosphere too, it’s worth checking out.
