Lake Lugano
Lugano, Switzerland
Draped over the border of Switzerland and Italy like a shimmering silk scarf, Lake Lugano combines the best of both countries. Alpine peaks over cobalt-blue waters are a Swiss postcard, while the Mediterranean fishing villages and mild microclimate reveal an Italian soul. Take a turn around the lake by land or sea to soak in the pristine landscape and resort vibe.
The basics
Lake Lugano is a popular destination both from Switzerland and Italy, and day trips to explore the lake and its towns depart from Locarno or Como. Explore by land with a private or small-group driving tour that includes stops in the main town of Lugano and smaller villages such as Morcote and Porlezza, plus a scenic drive along the lakeshore.
Alternatively, set sail on a Lake Lugano boat tour to admire the spectacular views and pretty towns from the water. The lake also offers a wide variety of hiking and biking trails and a promenade to stroll at your own pace.
Things to know before you go
Most of the touring on Lake Lugano is outdoors, so dress for the weather and bring a hat and sunscreen in summer.
The lakeshore is dotted with small parks, waterfront promenades, and small beaches ideal for families with kids.
Scenic trails skirt the lake for walking, hiking, and cycling; get a trail map at a local tourist office or bookshop to strike out on your own.
The main town of Lugano and its promenade are easy to explore with a wheelchair or stroller, but many boat tours are not accessible.
How to get there
Lake Lugano is set on the southernmost tip of the Swiss canton of Ticino and spreads over the border into Italy. The main town of Lugano is linked by rail to most major cities in northern Italy and southern Switzerland or you can fly to the lake via the Lugano regional airport or Milan’s Malpensa or Linate international airports.
When to get there
This cross-border lake is known for its temperate climate, not too hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter—you’ll even spot lemon and palm trees growing along the lake’s shore. Summer is the best time to visit if you want to take a boat tour or explore the area’s trails as winter months tend to get significant rainfall.
What to see on Lake Lugano
A wide variety of attractions ring Lake Lugano, from chic lakeside resort towns to historic gardens, scenic overlooks, and panoramic trails. By far the most famous is the town of Lugano, known for its picturesque old town, high-end shopping, and vibrant art scene. From Lugano, explore the lush Ciani Park or take the funicular up to the top of Mount Brè to admire the view and explore the sky-high trails. You can also walk the Olive Grove Trail that skirts the waterfront.
