POINT OF INTEREST

Lake Symphony

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 5P47+J5

Backed by the soaring pinnacles of Petronas Twin Towers (Petronas Towers), Kuala Lumpur’s signature sight, Lake Symphony creates an arresting display at night, as lights illuminate the dancing fountains and jets of water swirl and spray like steam from a dragon. You can catch one of five evening performances: Two offer sound and light, while three have light effects only.

The basics

Lake Symphony doesn’t belong to the Petronas Twin Towers (Petronas Towers): It’s part of KLCC Park, which adjoins the Suria KLCC shopping center at the towers' base. Visiting the park and lake is free, and it’s easy to head to the water when the light show plays. You can join a tour that pairs the light show with other attractions like the River of Life waterfront area or Kuala Selangor Fireflies (Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park).

Things to know before you go

  • Lake Symphony is a good choice for families, sightseers, and photographers.
  • You’ll need a fish-eye lens to capture the Petronas Twin Towers and the light show in a single shot. Vendors sell phone-friendly versions at a markup on the standard retail price, but you can come prepared with your own.
  • KLCC Park has smooth paths suitable for people using wheelchairs, with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms.

How to get there

Lake Symphony sits within KLCC Park, next to the Suria KLCC shopping center and in the shadow of the Petronas Twin Towers. The best train station is KLCC LRT, which is less than a 5-minute walk from the lake, or you can catch the MRT to Persiaran KLCC (Putrajaya line), about a 10-minute walk from the lake.

When to get there

Lake Symphony’s fountains work to cool Kuala Lumpur’s steamy air during the day, but it’s only worth visiting after dark, with the Petronas Twin Towers illuminated in the background and the light show in the foreground. There are light and sound performances daily between 8pm and 10pm.

The best city lights in and around Kuala Lumpur

Lake Symphony is Kuala Lumpur’s best-known light show, but it’s not the only one. The River of Life, a bold urban renewal, marks where the Klang River and Gombak River meet: At night, the waters come alive in blue, as does the historic Jamek Mosque (Masjid Jamek). Otherwise, visit the Secret Garden Putrajaya at Taman Putra Perdana park or the City of Digital Lights at Shah Alam’s i-City Theme Park. Both boast trees dripping with lights.
