The basics
Tasmania's cool climate is ideal for growing the ingredients necessary to make fine malt whisky. While early European settlers on the island did produce whisky, Tasmania went for a good 150 years with not a single distillery. Lark Distillery changed that when it opened its doors in 1992, and today, the distillery is celebrated across Australia and internationally. While the actual distillery is located north of town in Pontville, all their whiskies are available to purchase at Lark Cellar Door, right in Hobart.
Things to know before you go
Lark Distillery’s Cellar Door is a must-visit for whisky fans or people looking for souvenirs for whisky-loving friends and family members. Whisky bar reservations are available online, and walk-ins are welcome, subject to availability. Note that the drinking age in Australia is 18, and particularly young-looking visitors may be asked for identification.
How to get there
Lark Cellar Door is located on Davey Street, right on the Hobart waterfront, in the Central Business District (CBD). It’s just across from the Maritime Museum of Tasmania and less than a block from Franklin Square and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. It’s within a short walk of most CBD hotels, and bus numbers 428, 449, 457, and 718 stop nearby.
When to get there
Lark Cellar Door is open every day of the week, with extended hours during the annual DARK Mofo festivities. There's no better or worse time to visit, though if you come earlier in the day, you may run into fewer crowds than in the evening. If you’re visiting during the after-work rush, consider reserving beforehand.
