Lauca National Park
Putre, Arica and Parinacota
Founded in 1970, Lauca National Park in North Chile is part of a UNESCO-designated Global Biosphere Reserve. The park’s dramatic natural scenery encompasses lakes, lagoons, snow-capped mountains, and hot springs; and is home to more than 140 different species of birds, making it one of the best places for birdwatching in northern Chile.
The basics
In addition to its arresting scenery, Lauca National Park harbors wildlife such as llamas, foxes, vicuna, and pumas. In order to increase your chance of spotting animals, explore the park on a day trip, which typically departs from the town of Arica. Tours, which allow you to focus on the scenery rather than the road, typically also visit Chungará Lake, the geoglyphs of the Lluta Valley, and the candelabrum cacti of Los Cardones Ravine.
Things to know before you go
- Due to the desert climate of the national park, ensure that you wear sunscreen and take plenty of water with you on your hike.
- At the entrance of the park, you’ll find an information center with restrooms. There are no shops throughout the park, so ensure that you take plenty of snacks and water.
- If you’re a keen birdwatcher then it's a good idea to take some binoculars with you.
How to get there
Lauca National Park is located 91 miles (145 kilometers) east of Arica. Buses from Arica take slightly less than 3-hours and depart only once a day. Check the website for further details.
When to get there
Due to its desert climate, Lauca National Park is a year-round destination; the area never receives much rainfall. During the evening, temperatures can plummet to below freezing so ensure that you take plenty of layers.
Exploring Parinacota Town
Located inside the national park, Parinacota Town is a quiet village surrounded by mountain scenery. Locals live at a relaxed pace and the tiny church is made entirely of white stone. The second-biggest village is Putre, which has a scattering of small stores to stock up on supplies.
