Leblon Beach (Praia do Leblon)
Leblon, Rio de Janeiro, Southeast Brazil, 22441-000
Fronting one of Rio de Janeiro’s wealthiest and most exclusive neighborhoods, Leblon Beach (Praia do Leblon) is one of the city’s cleanest and safest beaches and a slightly quieter alternative to Ipanema. Separated from Ipanema by a canal, the beach is particularly popular with families, as it offers a play area with beach toys and playground equipment.
The Basics
While calmer and less crowded than Copacabana and even Ipanema, this sandy stretch still offers beautiful views of the mountains, a string of beach bars serving caipirinhas, and all the usual amenities, including chairs, umbrellas, showers, and food stalls. Short visits to Leblon Beach are typically included in comprehensive tours of Rio de Janeiro, along with stops at some of the city’s other well-known beaches. Jewish heritage–themed tours can take you to see some nonbeach landmarks, including Beit Lubavitch Synagogue and Midrash Cultural Center.
Things to Know Before You Go
Leblon is a must-visit for those wishing to soak up Rio’s beach culture.
While Leblon is safer than many other Rio beaches, you should still keep an eye on your belongings.
Drinks purchased on the beach can be expensive, so if you’re on a budget, buy them at a local store and bring them with you.
Nearby Rua Dias Ferreira in Leblon is home to some of Rio’s top restaurants.
How to Get There
The closest Metro station to Leblon Beach is Antero de Quental (lines 1 and 2), two blocks away. By Metro, it takes 20 minutes to get here from Copacabana Beach and 30 minutes from downtown Rio. From Ipanema Beach, it’s a 30-minute walk along the beachfront.
When to Get There
There is no bad time to visit the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, but if you are seeking heat and celebrations, summer (December to March) is your best bet. That’s the time of the hottest temperatures and festivities including Christmas, New Year, and Carnival. Those seeking a quieter experience and lower prices can visit in winter, when days are still warm and sunny, but nights can get a little chilly.
Leblon Lookout (Mirante do Leblon)
Some of the best views of Leblon and Ipanema are from this overlook uphill from the western end of Leblon Beach. It’s an easy 10-minute walk from the beach, and there are food and drink vendors and tables and chairs, making it an attractive spot to while away some time.
