Lenbachhaus
Luisenstraße 33, Munich, Germany, 80333
The Lenbachhaus is a twofer for Munich visitors. It's one of Europe’s largest art and cultural history museums, and its vast collection comes housed in a Florentine-style villa built for the painter Franz von Lenbach. It’s perhaps most famous for exhibiting works from the Blue Rider—der Blaue Reiter—movement, plus other contemporary German movements from the 20th century.
The basics
The Lenbachhaus has the world’s most extensive collection of works from the Blue Rider movement, all thanks to a 1,000-piece donation from Gabriele Münter (a prominent German painter) in 1957. While works in the museum date back to the 18th century, the vast majority are contemporary—though that word encompasses a broad brush.
Munich City Pass holders get free admission to the Lenbachhaus. Even those only lightly interested in modern art can enjoy the fabulous villa and its original furnishings, not to mention its picturesque grounds, immaculate gardens, and splashing fountains.

How to get there
The Lenbachhaus is a 5-minute walk from Munich Central Station, where all S trains stop (exit at Hauptbahnhof). Subway lines U2 and U8 (exit at Konigsplatz) and U1 and U7 (exit at Stiglmaierplatz) also work. For the tram, take line 27 (exit at Karolinenplatz); for the bus, line 100 (exit at Konigsplatz).
When to get there
There’s no wrong time to explore the Lenbachhaus. The museum is typically closed on Mondays; for the rest of the week, hours tend to hover between 10am and 6pm, though check the website before visiting. For the smallest crowds, visit closer to opening or closing on a weekday.
A maze of Munich art and history
The Lenbachhaus is at a fabulous location—a few blocks from Munich’s Old Town, central squares like Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz, and Alte Pinakothek, an even larger art museum. If you’re not taking a formalized art/history tour of Munich, create a self-guided tour starting in this area. Half a dozen museums are within a 5-minute walk from the Lenbachhaus.
